It’s no secret that impervious surfaces add dramatically to
storm water runoff problems: erosion, downstream flooding,
and pollution of surface waters. Paved areas are the biggest
culprits. For most road surfaces, parking areas, low-use
driveways, utility access roads, pedestrian pathways,
highway shoulders, and fire lanes, there are many advantages
to surfaces that can absorb surface water instead of
shedding it.
One of the most exciting products in this area is Grassy
Pavers porous paving system, distributed by CV Supply.
Grassy Pavers grass paver is installed over road base with
sand fill and turf or gravel. Introduced in 1997 and made of
97% post-consumer recycled
HDPE
plastic, Grassy Pavers grass paver is
installed on top of a gravel road base. Then the cells are
filled with a soil/sand mix and planted with grass or filled
with gravel.
Advantages
of Grassy Pavers grass paver are numerous. After the turf
becomes fully established, even large trucks can drive over
it without risk of root compaction. The product can handle
concentrated loads in excess of 97,000 lbs per square foot,
which is greater than that of most tractor-trailers and fire
trucks. Established Grassy Pavers grass paver areas require
essentially the same maintenance as lawns or athletic
fields: mowing, irrigation if necessary, occasional
fertilizer, etc. Over the life cycle of the product,
maintenance requirements will be lower than those of
conventional asphalt pavement.
The biggest
advantage
of Grassy Pavers grass paver has to do with storm water
management. Using the product can eliminate the need for
costly storm water management systems, such as detention
ponds, infiltration basins, and storm water sewers. By
allowing rainwater to percolate into the soil, groundwater
is recharged and pollutant loading to surface waters is
reduced.
The primary difference between Grassy Pavers grass paver and
other pervious paving systems (pervious asphalt or modular
concrete porous grid pavers, for example) is that this
material has a much greater pervious area (97%). Concrete
grid pavers are up to 75% solid, limiting overall
permeability. Concrete pavers also absorb heat and actually
make successful grass growth difficult at best. Porous
asphalt has an even smaller open area. With the smaller open
(pervious) area, the greater the likelihood of silt clogging
the material. Another difference with concrete grid pavers
is that, depending on the grid configuration, you may have
exposed block in the grass area; that shouldn’t happen with
Grassy Pavers grass paver.
The cost of Grassy Pavers grass paver is highly variable
depending on the size of the project. For a 10,000 square
foot project, the cost will be about $2.00 per square foot
delivered in most cases. Because of the significant
economies of scale with Grassy Pavers grass paver, for a
very large project it can become cost-competitive with
asphalt.
Along with the Grassy Pavers grass paver product, CV Supply,
Inc. distributes a similar product,
Equiterr, which is designed for the Equine
industry.
Equiterr is a modular soil stabilization
product engineered specifically for the equestrian industry.
It is the key to creating footing stabilization systems in
arenas, training areas and paddocks. This system creates a
stable, porous base for your footing material by combining
the soil strength of a stone aggregate base with the
stabilizing characteristics of a stone filled EquiTerr
layer. The system increases soil stability and enhances
footing drainage. EquiTerr is the ideal
solution for improving muddy, rutted soil conditions along
fence rows and around gates and barn access areas.
EquiTerr's unique design allows for year round utilization
and enjoyment of your riding and training facilities.
Without
Equiterr, arenas,
paddocks and training areas require constant work, time and
expenditure. EquiTerr
stabilizes
the sub soils, provides the chosen surface material e.g.
sand, from mixing with and dissipating into the sub soils.
Without the EquiTerr system, horse areas become muddy,
rutted and more susceptible to causing injury to horses and
riders.
